Policy Statement – Private Tutoring

Progress Tutoring insists that all of their tutors are enhanced CRB checked.

As an organisation using the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) disclosure service to assess applicants’ suitability for positions of trust, Progress Tutoring complies fully with the CRB Code of Practice and undertakes to treat all applicants for positions fairly. Progress Tutoring undertakes not to discriminate unfairly against any subject of a disclosure on the basis of conviction or other information revealed.

Progress Tutoring is committed to the fair treatment of its tutors, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, responsibilities for dependants, age, physical/mental disability or offending background.

We have a written policy on the recruitment of former offenders, which is made available to all disclosure applicants at the outset of the recruitment process.

We actively promote equality of opportunity for all with the right mix of talent, skills, and potential and welcome applications from a wide range of candidates. We select all tutors based on their skills, qualifications and experience.

A disclosure is only requested after a thorough risk assessment has indicated that one is both proportionate and relevant to the position concerned. For those positions where a disclosure is required all application forms, job adverts and recruitment briefs will contain a statement that a disclosure will be requested in the event of the individual being offered the position.

At interview, or in a separate discussion, we ensure that an open and measured discussion takes place on the subject of any offences or other matter that might be relevant to the position. Failure to reveal information that is directly relevant to the position sought could lead to withdrawal of an offer of employment.

We make every subject of a CRB disclosure aware of the existence of the CRB Code of Practice and make a copy available on request.

We undertake to discuss any matter revealed in a disclosure with the person seeking the position before withdrawing any conditional offer of employment.

Having a criminal record will not necessarily bar you from working with us. This will depend on the nature of the position and the circumstances and background of your offences.

Safeguarding children and protecting yourself from allegations.

All tutors have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children/students by helping to provide a safe learning environment for them whilst also protecting themselves as an educator.

Progress Tutoring recommends that tutors:

  • Avoid having conversations with students which may be open to criticism and different interpretations.
  • Leave the door to the room open in which one-to-one tuition is taking place. Sit at a different side of the table to the student.
  • It is preferable that a parent or adult is present in the house during the lesson.
  • Report any unplanned contact, inappropriate contact or suspected crushes to the parent and Progress Tutoring.
  • Be aware of any warning signs of abuse to a child and report them to Progress Tutoring, such as:
  1. Physical injury or bruises.
  2. Changes in behaviour attitude or emotion.
  3. Changes in physical presentation ( weight loss / unkempt).
  4. Signs of self harm neglect or bullying.
  5. Signs of substance abuse.
  • Progress Tutoring upholds and expects its tutors to uphold a non-discrimination policy be it on the basis of ethnicity, culture, religion, gender, sexual orientation or disability.

By being aware we can all minimise risks and ensure the concerns of all children/students are addressed and our tutors are safeguarded.
